The Civil Services Examination (CSEis a competitive examination conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) nationwidein India for the recruitment of personnel to higher Civil Services of the Government of India, such as Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service& other services.

It is referred to as the UPSC examination, and UPSC CSEand is conducted in three phases: a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (Paper-I consisting of General Studies and Paper-II, referred to as the Civil Service Aptitude Test or CSAT), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying and only marks of seven are counted. Subsequently, shortlisted candidates based on the scores obtained in preliminary examination will face a personality test (interview) for final consolidation.

The preliminary examination intends to focus on analytical abilities and understanding rather than the ability to memorize. The new pattern includes two papers of two hours duration and 200 marks each. Both papers have multiple-choice objective type questions only.  They are as follows: Tests the candidate's knowledge on current events, history of India and Indian national movement, Indian and world geography, Indian polity Panchayati Raj system and governance, economic and social development, environmental ecology, biodiversity, climate change and general science, Art and culture.

General Science and Technology is a subject that is equally important as other subjects for the UPSC civilservices exam. Every year handful of about questions will be asked from this section in the UPSC – CSE. Therefore, general science & its related subjects and marks obtained thereof are critical for passing this exam at both the levels (preliminary) and in mains, if anyone takes Biology/Medicine as subjects.

It is assumed that students from science or engineeringbackgrounds will find this section easy, while others who are from the non-science background may find thissection a bit difficult. Preparedness, acquisition of understanding on the topics provided below in the syllabus with in which questions will arise is important. None the less, apart from the preliminary examination, the detail study of Biology/Medicine as a subject for Main examination also needs critical tips, mechanistic aspects and critical know how. This will only be  explained or taught by Professor of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Biotechnology.
